Introduction
The Justice Desk at AMRI is working with Edward Flynn CSSp, Geneva for Human Rights and the Medical Missionaries of Mary on a campaign focused on the global prevention of obstetric fistula. The SafeBirth4All campaign was officially launched on Monday, 21st May 2024 by Mrs Sabina Higgins, to highlight and raise awareness of the experience of obstetric as an issue of human rights and human dignity.
Obstetric Fistula is the consequence of an obstructed labour that develops a hole between the birth canal and the bladder and/or rectum. This results in persistent incontinence, along with other medical complications. It is also linked to one of major causes of maternal mortality, the delivery of stillborn babies and in some cases infertility. Access to safe maternal care can prevent obstetric fistula, along with access to necessary fistula repair surgery for the many thousands of women living with the trauma of obstetric fistula, some for more than 50 years.
May 23rd is the UN International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. The theme of this year’s day is Breaking the Cycle: Preventing Fistula Worldwide. The UN created this day each year as a global call to action to raise awareness and support women and girls across the world who have or are at risk of obstetric fistula. The childbirth injury is preventable and together we can end obstetric fistula, https://www.un.org/en/observances/end-fistula-day
